MIAMI, Sept. 19, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Florida began enforcing "Dexter's Law," or HB 255, a measure that significantly increases penalties for aggravated animal cruelty. The law introduces a permanent online registry of offenders, which will be accessible to the public and will list individuals even when adjudication is withheld. The registration requirements will start on January 1, 2026.

Dexter's Law adds a 1.25 sentencing multiplier for aggravated animal cruelty, meaning defendants convicted of serious offenses face longer prison terms than before. It also requires law enforcement agencies to publish the names of offenders in an online database, similar to the state's sex offender registry.
