Commitment will expand access for much needed funding to help small and medium-sized enterprises across Canada grow
TORONTO, Sept. 10, 2026 /CNW/ -- CIBC today announced a $2 billion commitment to support much needed funding for small and medium-sized defence-related and dual-use businesses across Canada.
The commitment is designed to help Canadian companies scale, strengthen domestic capability and pursue growth opportunities in sectors that are becoming increasingly important to Canada's economic resilience and long-term competitiveness.
"Canadian businesses in the defence and resiliency ecosystem have the expertise and ambition to lead," said Harry K. Culham, President and Chief Executive Officer, CIBC. "Our $2 billion commitment reflects our confidence in Canadian businesses and our determination to help them access the financial support they need to scale and succeed."
Funding will be targeted to support eligible businesses operating across a range of strategic sectors, including infrastructure, energy, cybersecurity, digital capabilities and advanced technologies.
The initiative combines financing with sector insight and dedicated banking support for eligible clients. Through Commercial Banking, CIBC has established a national network of defence sector specialists to provide sector expertise, structured financing and strategic connections to help businesses navigate the industry and grow.
"Canadian companies in the defence and resiliency ecosystem are poised to play a critical role in strengthening our economy, advancing innovation and enhancing national resilience," said Susan Rimmer, Senior Executive Vice-President and Group Head, Commercial Banking, CIBC. "Through our commitment, we're bringing together funding, sector expertise, market access and strategic connections to help Canadian businesses scale, compete globally and seize the opportunities ahead."
CIBC expands support for Canada's defence and resiliency community
In addition to today's announcement, CIBC is expanding its Military Banking Program for Canada's defence community, including members of the Canadian Armed Forces, veterans, members of the Coast Guard, and their families. The program offers specialized personal banking support, tailored advice and exclusive benefits, including relocation-related mortgage fee relief for eligible military moves.
These initiatives build on CIBC's continued support for the sector. In February, CIBC announced its participation as a partner bank for the Defence, Security and Resilience Bank Development Group. In May, the bank hosted its CIBC Defence and Resiliency Summit, bringing together more than 700 leaders from across the country.
Further supporting the broader innovation ecosystem, CIBC is also the exclusive Canadian Big Six bank sponsor of Icebreaker, Canada's defence innovation network.
