Cookware Sustainability Alliance Urges Newsom: Veto SB 682 to Protect California Jobs and Culinary Culture

SB 682 will limit consumer choice, forcing Californian households and businesses to pay more for everyday kitchen products
SACRAMENTO, Calif., Sept. 23, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Over the next three weeks, Governor Gavin Newsom will decide whether to sign or veto SB 682, a bill that would impose a statewide ban on the sale of kitchen products used to prepare, store, or dispense food and beverages. This bill is much broader than pots and pans. It includes everyday items from a cutting board and coffee maker to a restaurant's walk-in refrigerator. If passed, this legislation will wreak havoc on California's economy, threatening jobs across the food industry and damaging the reputation of the food culture that helps define the state.
The Cookware Sustainability Alliance (CSA) strongly urges Governor Newsom to veto SB 682.
SB 682 would strip Californians of their access to affordable, reliable kitchen essentials, leaving them with fewer, more expensive options. California's iconic culinary landscape, from world-renowned restaurants like The French Laundry to food trucks serving local communities, will suffer. Thousands of jobs will be at risk, and countless businesses across the state will face hard choices about how to replace expensive grills, refrigerators, and other cookware needed to operate.
The bill mirrors baseless TikTok videos spreading false science. What started out as an effort to regulate products that contain harmful PFAS chemicals has been whittled down, due to politics, not science, to a targeted attack on the cookware industry. The bill is based on a false premise that all PFAS chemicals are hazardous, including fluoropolymers, which are used to coat non-stick cookware. The science, however, is clear: fluoropolymers are non-toxic, inert, and do not bioaccumulate or dissolve in water, making them completely safe for use in food preparation.
For decades, both the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the European Food Safety Authority have recognized fluoropolymers as safe for food preparation.
"This bill does not address the real health risks of PFAS, which come from emissions from the chemical production process," said Steve Burns, President of the CSA. "In addition, the implications for everyday Californians would be severe. The last thing Californians need are even higher costs to eat at home or at restaurants. Sacramento should get out of kitchens and focus on real problems that need to be solved."
CSA encourages collaboration for balanced solutions that protect both consumers and the environment, grounded in science, rather than a blanket ban as suggested with SB 682.
