Denton Police First to Adopt Decision-Focused Firearms Training

PR Newswire

SILVER POINT, Tenn., Oct. 15, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Saving Lives USA Foundation, a non-profit focused on reducing the negative impacts of police and security service use-of-force, has announced the successful implementation of a decision-based firearms training paradigm at the City of Denton Police Department. Saving Lives USA donated the NURO® Shooting System, specialized equipment designed for visual range control that helped enable this effort.

Denton's new capabilities mean that visual stimulus may now be used throughout live fire training to drive officer decision-making and skill performance relative to changing subject behavior. New York State's DCJS was the first entity globally to evaluate and implement these advances in training.

"It cannot be overstated how big of a deal this is," said Dr. Justin Smith, a neuroscience PhD whose research focus is decision-making and stress, during the 2023 annual Public Safety Symposium in Albany, New York. "Using visual stimulus to control range training develops firearms skills that are different, at a synaptic level, than anything we have seen before in law enforcement."

Previously adopted by Collin College in McKinney, Texas, Denton will be the second police academy and the first law enforcement agency in the State to implement these ground-breaking changes in the development of officer skill, decision-making, and de-escalation ability.
