Now in its fourth year, the annual report reveals useful insights into patient experiences, preferences and predictions for the future of healthcare

CINCINNATI, Sept. 22, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- PatientPoint®, the Point of Change company that transforms the healthcare experience through the strategic delivery of behavior-changing content at critical moments of care, has unveiled its fourth annual Patient Confidence Index, offering insights into the ways consumers are feeling about the future of healthcare. Findings from this year's report reinforce the importance of the doctor-patient relationship and explore where patients feel technology does or doesn't have a place in healthcare conversations. The 2025 PatientPoint Patient Confidence Index is based on a national survey conducted by Talker Research of over 2,000 patients who were queried about their trust in the healthcare system and their personal predictions for how technology will impact interactions with their healthcare providers over the next 5-10 years.

Technology Brings Convenience but Can't Replace Care
The importance of in-person patient interactions was a key theme across the 2025 Patient Confidence Index. While reliance on AI seems to be on the rise across nearly all industries, only 3% of respondents said they'd rely on a chatbot for receiving medical information compared to 88% who stated a preference for receiving that information directly from their physician.

Digital interactions still have a time and place, according to the data. While close to 60% of respondents prefer in-person visits for key moments such as receiving a diagnosis or prescription, many are still open to telehealth and remote options for more basic care. Of course, where technology really shines for patients is when it comes to convenience. Well over half of all respondents consider online patient portals and scheduling to be key elements of a "modern" doctor's office and 39% expect to see higher tech elements like biometric check-in to become standard over the next decade.

In Doctors We Trust
Trust also emerged as one of the most consistent themes across the 2025 Patient Confidence Index. More than four in five patients (83%) said they trust their healthcare provider and the information they share, and when it comes to personal health data, patients are overwhelmingly comfortable giving access to their primary doctor (92%), specialty doctors (88%), and medical staff (85%).

Patients were far less comfortable sharing data with the government (60%), AI or chatbots (47%), or med-tech companies (36%). And while many consumers are experimenting with digital tools in other parts of their lives, healthcare remains a space where they want to hear directly from a professional, they know. These findings reinforce a critical point: it is trust in providers, and the conversations they have with their patients, that ultimately drives confidence and positive health outcomes.

Patients are clear that digital tools should not replace the human connection they value most. According to the study, patients overwhelmingly turn to their doctor first for reliable health information, even though convenience-driven features like rapid test results and biometric check-ins are predicted to become the new standard. The results point to a future in which technology is welcomed, but only in addition to the provider relationship, not instead of it.

"Now more than ever, patients are relying on their healthcare providers for clear, reliable healthcare information. With PatientPoint screens in over 30,000 doctors' offices nationwide, we've been able to see first-hand how the right information shared at the right time can impact doctor-patient relationships," said Kyle Barich, Chief Marketing Officer at PatientPoint. "Building trust between doctors and patients has a measurable impact on healthcare outcomes and we look forward to continue fostering those interactions through our educational content."

The 2025 Patient Confidence Index is based on a Talker Research survey of 2,000 U.S. adults who visited a doctor within the past 12 months. The survey was conducted online July 22–29, 2025, using dynamic sampling to ensure representation. Respondents were awarded points with small cash-equivalent value for participation. Statistical significance was calculated at the 95% level, and data was not weighted.
