URBAN MINING INDUSTRIES COMPLETE GROUNDBREAKING COLLABORATION TO DECARBONIZE CONSTRUCTION AT 270 PARK AVENUE
PR Newswire
NEW YORK, Sept. 23, 2025
NEW YORK, Sept. 23, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Urban Mining Industries, a leader in circular economy solutions, significantly reduced embodied carbon emissions from JPMorganChase's new global headquarters at 270 Park Avenue using its groundbreaking low carbon concrete solution. Through the innovative use of Pozzotive® Ground Glass Pozzolan (Pozzotive®), a high-performance, low-carbon cement replacement, the project demonstrates a powerful model for sustainable construction.
The project utilized a concrete mix design that replaced 40% of the traditional cement with Pozzotive® in the ready mix concrete poured at every floor of the 60 story, 2.2 million square-foot tower. This critical material is a cleaner, safer, and more consistent alternative to traditional pozzolans and supplementary cementitious materials. By replacing cement on a pound for pound basis, Pozzotive® reduced the embodied carbon footprint of the concrete by roughly 5,500 tons, while creating a higher performing concrete.
The use of Pozzotive® is a cornerstone of the project's circular construction strategy. Pozzotive® is made from post-consumer waste glass that would otherwise be landfilled. The glass is harvested, processed in a propriety chemical and water free process, and used regionally, creating a perfect example of a circular economy by turning a waste product into a high-value, high-performance, and low carbon building material. This not only diverts waste from landfills, but also reduces the impact of the energy-intensive traditional cement production process and transportation heavy traditional glass recycling process.
JPMorganChase's procurement practices have been a key driver in the project's success, actively leveraging its buying power to foster a market for low-carbon materials. By specifying and utilizing an innovative material like Pozzotive®, the firm sent a strong market signal that helped to stand up this first-of-its-kind manufacturing facility. This intentional procurement strategy provides a clear demand signal, encouraging further investment and scale-up in the low-carbon manufacturing sector.
Urban Mining Industries extend its gratitude to the numerous project collaborators whose expertise and dedication made this groundbreaking project possible, including Foster + Partners, Severud, AECOM Tishman, and SRM Concrete.
"When asked by JPMorganChase to envision 270 Park Avenue as a model for the 21st century workplace, we knew Severud Structural Engineers had to give our contribution. The building's design included 52,000 cubic yards of concrete that substituted locally-sourced Pozzotive® ground-glass pozzolan (GGP) for 40% of the cement in all structural concrete except the 16,000-psi mix," said Fortunato Orlando, PE, Principal, Severud Associates, Consulting Engineering, P.C. "This innovative use of recycled glass instead of Portland cement not only saved over 5,000 tons of embodied carbon and diverted more than 29 million glass bottles from landfills, it also enhanced the strength of the concrete – a double win for the project. This is the wave of the future, and it has been incorporated in our company specifications."
"Pozzotive® was the centerpiece of a much larger strategy to deliver the greenest skyscraper in America, if not the world, said Max Driscoll AIA, LEED-AP, Vice President, Sustainability, Construction Management AECOM. "To go from small, pilot tests to a 2.2M sf pour is a testament the commitment of JPMorganChase, the design team, and AECOM Tishman to push beyond what has been done before and really model what leadership looks like in sustainability. We are extremely proud to have facilitated a market transformation for ground glass pozzolan as a leading decarbonization strategy for construction."
"It was a pleasure working with the Urban Mining team on this project," said Constantine Quadrozzi, General Manager, Smyrna Ready Mix Concrete, LLC. "The Pozzotive® product was consistently available when needed, delivered reliable quality, and was supported by excellent communication. Every concrete mix incorporating Pozzotive® exceeded our performance expectations."
The collaboration at 270 Park Avenue serves as a blueprint for future growth of circular supplementary cementitious material production, proving that large-scale, high-performance projects can be executed while achieving significant environmental benefits. This project showcases how commitment to a circular economy, coupled with strategic procurement, can create a ripple effect that extends beyond a single building, driving systemic change in the way our cities are built.
About Urban Mining Industries:
